Studio Salvi Weber is an architecture office with studios in Vienna and Berlin. Founded in 2009 as Schenker Salvi Weber, the office has grown through competitions and now brings together around 70 architects working on projects in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The studio’s spectrum ranges from educational and cultural buildings to office and residential projects, as well as complex transformations of existing fabric.
For Studio Salvi Weber, the new often begins with what is already there. To build in continuity means reading the qualities of the existing with precision and carrying them forward in response to contemporary needs. Old and new remain legible as distinct layers of time – held together without being made the same.
This approach is evident in Apostelhof in Vienna, where an ensemble shaped by four different periods was carefully developed further, as well as in the KinderKunstLabor in St. Pölten and the historic Ballonhalle at Vienna’s Arsenal for the Academy of Fine Arts. With Belvedere Salzburg, the studio is also realising a museum project at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Salzburg’s Old Town; the extension to Museum Wiesbaden likewise engages with the question of how an existing cultural place can be continued.
The studio’s completed buildings have received recognition in recent years on many different levels: for architectural excellence and for the quality of collaboration, through Austria’s highest architecture awards as well as in an international context. The RIBA International Award for Excellence, nominations for the Mies van der Rohe Award, the Austrian State Prize for Architecture and the ZV Bauherr:innenpreis stand for this breadth. These achievements are the result of collective work – shaped by a studio in which around 70 architects with different experiences and perspectives work together today.
Competitions have shaped Studio Salvi Weber from the outset. For us, they are both a design tool and a productive exceptional condition: a mode of working in which conceptual clarity, constructional precision and the willingness to revise are put to the test.
